This shouldn't really speak to me, a non-believer, but it does

In fact, it speaks to me so it hurts. Shhh, folks, it's my secret weak spot, my Achilles' heel.

Very nice.
I remember singing "Panis Angelicus" in choir, though certainly I had no solo.
I seem to recall us singing- out of earshot of the Kappellmeister or course- something like "Don't forget the sandwiches..." to the same tune.
Then I'm sure we did "Jingle bells, Santa smells..."

Given the number of times the singers repeat "pauper servus et humilis": a servant poor and humble, one sometimes wonders if we have lost touch with the real core of Christianity, but such musings are for a less festive time: possibly the morning after New Year's Eve.

Ah, Montag - the universal carnivalism of childhood, that sees us making up mundane or profane versions of hymns and Christmas carols and the like... do you know, I find that really endearing, somehow. I bet people have done that since the beginning of time.

And yes, as I said, I don't have religion and/or faith as such, but I would agree that Christianity's core messages of poverty, humility and love seem to have fallen by the wayside even for those who profess to follow its teachings. Sometimes particularly those.

Merry Christmas Anna.
It all began in Finland.

Hei Robert RH, sorry to leave you stranded here for such a long time. Hope you had a Happy Christmas (you are right, of course - it all did begin in Finland) and that 2008 brings you good things only.
