Leafing through the Collins Complete & Unabridged English Dictionary today (as one does), I happenstanced on a shocking entry: mahi-mahi, a variant of dolphin, from the Hawai'ian language, literally: strong-strong.
Horror.
I have eaten mahi-mahi. Quite a lot of mahi-mahi. It comes in small fillets, not bigger than the palm of a small female's hand. First time I ate it (at Luigi's in Hilo), I asked what it was, pointed out that I was vegetarian (well, of the not-eating-things-that-fly-or-run-kind) - -
Ah. Maybe therein lies the answer, if that's what I actually said to the bloke. Of course, dolphins don't really do either. But the fillets are tiny! And it really is like fish, not like meat!
If it turns out I have eaten dolphin, I am going to have to have both my physical and mental innards seriously scraped out. Ewwwwwwwww

I think we can rest easy, Anna MR. 'Dolphin' and 'dolphin fish' are apparently not the same, and 'mahi-mahi' is the latter: http://www.ocean.udel.edu/mas/seafood/mahi.html

Me too, I am mildy carnivorous, but eating dolphin does seem a bit cannibalistic, doesn't it? Re. the wee glassy orange balls (fish eggs) I had them the other night in a Japanese place, the sushi was rolled in them, I'd never had them before (fish eggs, not sushi), but I ate them politely without fuss, not wanting to show my ignorance - and here was me thinking I was quite wordly!
Ah, nmj, fish eggs are a Finnish staple. Yum. No dolphings please, though.
