Still on Ali

I've been thinking about Ali Smith still, and I think I've pinpointed one thing that bugs me in the book. There is something *obvious* about it, and the characters.

#1 - there is an obvious effort at being "unusual" formatwise. It feels gimmicky.
#2 - ever heard of a story with a male University lecturer character who is unable to keep it in his pants? Yeah, I have, too...
#3 - how about a sexy, beautiful, self-sufficient, strong female character who lives outside and above the law and convention, yada, yada, yada...

I would sympathise more with little women protagonists who just can't keep it together. I don't need to look up to superwoman. But then, that's only me.
